Fight Club, 1999

I love movies but 'Fight Club' stands out as my favourite. One of the rare movies that inspired me to read the original novel, and one of the rare movies that had evolved beyond a good novel. The movie has many layers but what appealed most to me is the philosophy of not being controlled by social conformity and not fearing chaos: Accept your fate, let it all fall over and then you can determine what you really want to prioritise.

Tyler Durden quotes:

"The things you own end up owning you." (Slave to loans keeping us in jobs we hate?)

"Self-improvement is masturbation. Now self-destruction..." (of our self-important ego is freedom).

"Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken."

"Stop controlling everything and just let go!"

"It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything."

"Fuck-off with your sofa units and serine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let... lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may."

"First you've gotta know—not fear, know—that someday you're gonna die."

"This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time."

"If you aren’t on your way to becoming a vet in six weeks, you will be dead." (Stop procrastinating).

"We are the all singing all dancing crap of the world."

"You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else."

Chemical burn scene: "This is the greatest moment of your life, man! And you’re off somewhere missing it... First you have to give up. First you have to know, not fear, know that some day you’re gonna die... It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything... Congratulations. You’re one step closer to hitting the bottom."

"You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world."

"God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

"In the world I see - you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway."

MEANDERINGS

First you need to decide what you really want. What do I want?

I want to live on the farm in more isolation, writing and consuming stories. I want enough money to play on my farm. And I want my wife, son and family to feel fulfilled and happy.

And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. Bible verse

How is this comparible with Fight Club? Don't try to control that which is not yours to control and you won't have to fight others as much. Prioritise and choose your battles.
